|With reference to the update on 26/08/16 below, I have added a poster to the Live List that advertises Tyranosaurus Rex at the Magic Village in Manchester. No mention of VdGG but as PH pointed out, bands were often asked to play at short notice. Joe Banks re-posted the poster online with the following comment: "Poster for T-Rex's appearance at Manchester's Magic Village club, 16 March 1968. Confirmed by a guy called Ray Pearson who was there that this was the gig where a proto-VDGG supported (possibly in place of Jacko Ogg). Ray says: 'VDG played electrified acoustic guitars through little crappy amps and using the small speaker to get feedback. Steve P-T played bongos during their set.'"
Steve P-T was Steve Peregrin Took. As far as I can see, there is no date on this poster, but 16th March 1968 was a Saturday; 28th April 1968 was a Sunday.

|A new date?
Van der Graaf Generator - 1968 - Manchester Magic Village
James Thomas suggested to me a few weeks ago a possible alternative scenario regarding Van der Graaf Generator's performance at the Magic Village club in Manchester. The Box: Apr. '68 England, Manchester, Magic Village Club - supporting Tyrannosaurus Rex (2 piece). A book by Bill Sykes about Roger Eagle, "Sit Down! Listen to This!", gives us a date: 28th April 1968, a Sunday, but no other mention.
Van der Graaf Generator - The Book: Hammill and Judge as a duo even played at Manchester's Magic Village Club supporting Tyrannosaurus Rex. Nick Pearne wasn't present at this gig because he didn't own a working instrument and there was nothing for him to play on. "Peter and I put together a set,” says Judge, “with Peter on guitar and lead vocals, and me singing harmony, playing recorders and ocarinas and such like, and playing percussion - bongos, shakers, and for one number an old typewriter.” PH from the sleevenotes for the CD version of the Aerosol Grey Machine: "We continued as a duo. We played at the magic village (prop: Roger Eagle, later of Eric's), supporting Tyrannosaurus (later, T) Rex among others."
Bill Sykes' book makes no mention of Tyrannosaurus Rex playing on April 28th but does list them playing on March 16th. So the question is; did VdGG in fact support Tyrannosaurus Rex on March 16th? And then return for a proper gig on April 28th?
Judge: We certainly played the Magic Village more than once, but how many times and when exactly, I don’t know.
The next known gig happened on 22nd Feb 1969, by which time Judge had left the band. But if he recalls playing more than once then this lends credence to the theory that they supported Tyrannosaurus Rex in March and then returned in April.
PH: Gosh, honestly can't remember but I suspect we played a couple of times there at least. We impressed Roger on our first appearance haha!
There is unlikely to be any documentary support for this theory but Bill Sykes' book indicates that Roger Eagle regularly allowed local bands to play as support, usually unpaid and at short notice.
