08/09/06 Added the review in Rockerilla magazine (June 2006) of Van der Graaf Generator - The Book.
"Two fans, a long-term British and a younger American, webmasters of the official VdGG website, sign an extraordinary opus which immediately becomes the absolute reference point on the subject. The biography of the apocalyptic lords of prog-rock, in a luxurious hard-cover edition for over 300 pages, is literally filled with colour pictures and is the 'labour of love' which springs from the collaboration of all the characters involved - sometimes marginally - in the research on Hammill and friends. The beginnings, the first conquests and the recording adventures are traced back, as well as the pictoresque experiences 'on the road' with a wealth of details on the italian missions, which remain unforgettable for better or worse. The strong accent on technical aspects is very important, because the changes personally made by Jackson and Banton to their instruments were very important for the overall sound: so important that one of the book appendices is devoted to the different organs which the latter used. Thanks to the strong character of the protagonists, the writers yield a very strong story, which in many points entwines with that of the Charisma label. The epilogue was unexpected, when the book was planned: and the epilogue was last year's reunion, which is only rapidly examined and which will hopefully yield material for a future new volume." (Thanks to Marco for the translation)
06/09/06 You can now watch the POP2 TV show of May 27th 1972, that featured Van der Graaf Generator, on the French TV INA website. The clip costs €6 and features VdGG playing Lost, Killer and Octopus at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris. The show took place on March 18th 1972.
03/09/06 It seems that the Rutherglen festival planned for August 28th 1971 was cancelled. See the NME (21st August 1971) piece added to the Live List for details. Thanks to Mick Capewell of www.marmalade-skies.co.uk for the clipping.

16/08/06 Added three adverts from the Melody Maker of July 18th 1970 to the Live List: Romford July 20th, Marquee July 26th and Van Dike August 1st 1970.
15/08/06 Added an English translation of the review of Still Life that appeared in the French magazine, Best, in April 1976. Thanks to Damian McVeigh.
14/08/06 Peter Hammill October/November tour dates announced.
28/07/06 Added a ticket for the VdGG gig in Utrecht on September 24th 1976 to the Live List. Thanks to Teunis van der Veen for the scan.
24/07/06 Added some stills from the video of VdGG at the de Montfort Hall in Leicester.
11/07/06 I managed to obtain an original copy of the International Times from 1968 where Hugh placed the advert (see The Book for the full story). It's on The Early Days page. I'm sure that's Arthur Brown on the cover... I have also reproduced more of the Smallads page, as some of the other ads are quite amusing.
10/07/06 I recently acquired this copy of the original Man-Erg master tape recorded at Trident Studios in 1971.
04/07/06 Further to the March 77 debate (the Live List), I have checked the Stockholm photo's in the PHSA and they are merely annotated "03/77", but definitely Stockholm. I've concluded that the Oslo and Stockholm gigs must have been before the Dutch gigs or after the German ones.
03/07/06 Teunis van der Veen has informed me that he attended a VdG gig at RASA, Utrecht, Holland on March 9th 1977. We have that date listed for a gig in Oslo that came from The Box, which appears to be incorrect. There is also an advert in OOR for that tour which bears out Teunis's diary entry (the Live List). That's clear enough, but unfortunately, the next day VdG are listed as playing in Stockholm, which is supported by pictures from the PHSA. The photos might be incorrectly annotated, which seems likely as the OOR advert has VdG not playing in Stockholm. Did anyone see VdG on March 10th 1977?
18/06/06 Added two Melody Maker Student Statement clippings to the Live List. These mention: Imperial College - 28 November 1970, with Genesis. It seems that Cochise were meant to support VdGG following a missed gig at Imperial College the previous week because they were "arrested by the French customs", but Genesis played instead. Cochise actually supported Quintessence at University College, London, on November 28th; and Central London Polytechnic - 28 January 1972. Thanks to Annette Palazzo for the second one.
14/06/06 Added some bits and pieces from Tim Toogood's VdGG scrapbook to the Live List. These include tickets for: Roundhouse - 18 April 1976, Bristol - 16 November 1976, Bath University - 21 October 1977, and an advert for Peter Hammill's gigs at the Wigmore Hall - 7+8 September 1974. Thanks Tim.
04/06/06 Added two nice posters from the 1975 London re-formation shows at the Victoria Palace on July 27th and the New Victoria on August 30th.
Thanks to Ray for the images.
19/05/06 Apologies for the lack of recent updates, but I just haven't felt like doing it since Jamie died. For those interested, I have put together a small personal tribute.
Normal service will no doubt resume shortly...

18/01/06 Added a new date to the Live List - 21st May 1970 at Jimmy's in Brighton. Alan Terrill was there, so can confirm that the gig took place. Thanks to Mick Capewell of www.marmalade-skies.co.uk for the clipping.
07/01/06 Added an advert for the Central London Poly gig on 28th January 1972 to the Live List. Thanks to Alison who spotted this in the back of the MOJO Classic edition scanned yesterday.
